Remember how I was planning to blog for every day of Artprize and just…didn’t?
Yeah, that happened. I feel bad about letting people down with that whole project, and I feel bad about the irregularity that’s been happening on the blog since June.
It followed a sort of cycle, where I would have a topic that I wanted to write about, and then I wouldn’t write about it, and then I’d feel guilty for not writing about it, and I’d feel like my next post had to make up for it, and it wouldn’t, and repeat.
So, for some general updates – I was in New York for the summer, which was wonderful. Metropolis was a great place to intern, and I’m grateful for everyone there for helping me so much. After that, I came home for two months. And then I went to Los Angeles, where I am now.
As you may notice, going back to Kendall wasn’t part of that. Kendall wasn’t a great place for me. I was doing pretty well if we’re just talking grades, but I felt like my work wasn’t getting any better. Because I switched majors twice, I was set back in my academic program by at least a year. Frankly, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to be a designer anymore, and I was discouraged that changing my major between very similar disciplines resulted in the need to spend an extra year in school. When I was at Kendall, I was really disappointed by the lack of community amongst students, and that’s a factor in my leaving as well.
So, what has this deadbeat dropout been doing? I’ve been writing a fair amount of fiction, working on a novel and writing little short stories and things. I put some of them into a zine, which I released for free on the internet. You can get it right now (please do) on Gumroad and Smashwords. I’ll be releasing Infinity every three months, so the next one will be out on January 1.
This is the cover of my zine. I made it myself. |
I’ve also applied to a university, hoping to enroll for next semester. I’m not sure if that will work out yet, but I’ll tell the entire internet when I know. I’ve also started a parody twitter account called @NPRFridge, which amuses me, if no one else. You should follow it so that you can watch me trying to be funny.
So, what’s next for the blog? I’m going to post on Mondays again, because my Mondays have been grey and sad* without blogging. Things are going to change, though. I’m going to be branching out, writing about books and things I’ve read and things I’ve learned and movies I’ve seen. I’ll still going to talk about art and design, but not exclusively art and design.
What else? I’ve been fairly active on my tumblr lately, and I’ve watched a lot of 30 Rock in the past three months. If you want me to be on your 30 Rock trivia team, that would be great. Also, I passed Paul Scheer in the hallway at Upright Citizen’s Brigade last week, and since he was on 30 Rock (he was the rival page to Kenneth!) I feel like I am a million degrees closer to becoming Tina Fey television greatness.
I’ll blog again next week, folks.
*I mean, I’m in Los Angeles, so the concepts of “grey and sad” are metaphorical, rather than literal.
