I’ve been obsessed with From Cover to Cover for the past few days. She designs a new cover for every book she reads! She put some major constraints on the project, so they all feel like they go together a bit. It’s wonderful! This project is giving me a whole bunch of ideas for a secret project that I’m going to launch soon.
Austin Kleon wrote this essay/how-to guide about writing that’s pretty interesting. I don’t work like that – he writes that he makes changes to his workspace so that he can be as productive and comfortable as possible. I’m not like that because I’m a lazy schmuck about my surroundings and I think that I should be able to write anywhere – right now, I’m sitting on my bed, but I’ve written posts from my car, from school, from my parent’s dining room. I need to be able to shut up and write, no matter where I am.
Last night I watched Art & Copy, a documentary about advertising. It was focused on a few ad firms that are doing everything right, and it just made me feel like “Hey. Advertising is really cool. I could totally do that.” I got thinking about ads that are really fantastic, and ones that have left an impression far deeper than selling the product. This Apple ad, for instance. People use the script from it like it’s a motivational quote. It makes me think about how the things that we make can be commercial and still meaningful, and how that makes them worthwhile.
