I love goals and I love lists and I love tackling a huge, unknown expanse of social distancing by giving myself a big, challenging goal.
I want to study math enough to pass the Math 7-12 Praxis test.
I used to be a math teacher (and I was teaching a math intervention group at school before social distancing) and I taught fifth and sixth grade math. However, I’m not actually certified to teach math – I’m certified to teach elementary content, through sixth grade, and that certification covers me teaching fifth and sixth grade math.
My math skills for lower middle school are strong, but once I get into seventh and eighth grade, they’re a little shaky. High school math? I haven’t looked at high school math since 2010.
I’ve definitely considered going for my certification in math 7-12 before, but I’m normally pretty busy with school and didn’t really have the time. Now that we’re social distancing in the midst of this pandemic, I have plenty of free time to pursue everything I’ve thought of doing in the past.
I’m tackling this by working on math for about an hour every day – I’m using Khan Academy, and starting with 7th grade math. So far, I’ve finished the modules on Negative Numbers: Addition and Subtraction and Negative Numbers: Multiplication and Division, and I’m currently working on Fractions, Decimals & Percentages.
What are you doing to pass the time while we’re all staying home?
