October Reads

Thrive

Get enough sleep and take a break once in a while! That’s my 11 word summary of Thrive. Arianna Huffington writes about the wakeup call she received in the form of her collapsing from lack of sleep and exhaustion. She writes about the importance of sleep and meditation, and creates a vision of how businesses could be successful without pushing employees to the point of burnout. I see how it’s beneficial to have someone in a position of power promoting these ideas, but she isn’t saying anything new. We’ve all heard of the importance of #selfcare at this point.

Speak No Evil

Books about LGBTQ teenagers will always break my heart, (see also, We Are Okay) and Speak No Evil was no exception. Niru, the main character, is Nigerian-American and balances values from both of those cultures. His life at the beginning of the book is uncomplicated, but becomes very complicated very quickly. The ending takes a really unexpected turn that left me asking why it had to be that way, but maybe that was the whole point.

Choose FI

It comes as a surprise to absolutely no one in my life that I am a money nerd. I would love to have a conversation with you about the reasons why you should invest for retirement, or the math behind deciding to buy versus rent a home, or the life changing magic of compound interest. Choose FI indulges my absurd passion in a way that is approachable and avoids being preachy.
